MS21 Discusses Healthcare Professional Burnout and Patient Empowerment in MS Care

12 May 2025

MS in the 21st Century and RealTalk MS have teamed up again for a new podcast episode entitled ‘Understanding HCP Burnout and Empowering Patients: How Can Patients and HCPs Work Together to Support One Another?.’ This episode features insights from Dr Mary Rensel, a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, and Amanda Montague from the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.

The episode looks at how burnout affects healthcare professionals (HCPs) and why it’s important for patients living with multiple sclerosis (MS) to feel empowered. Dr Rensel talks about how burnout – feelings of emotional exhaustion, cynicism and meaninglessness in a person’s work – can make it hard for doctors to give the best care, and Amanda explains why it’s crucial for patients to feel confident talking about their symptoms, making decisions about their treatment, and managing their MS.

The guests also share practical tips to help reduce burnout and improve care, such as patients planning what to talk about during doctor visits, ensuring the aims of the consultation are clear, and using technology wisely. The discussion highlights that both patients and doctors need to work together to have a positive impact for both HCPs and patients.
